Signs You Have Bats
Chirping and rustling at dusk
A roost gets noisy right before the colony leaves to feed. High squeaks and light fluttering inside a wall or attic peak are typical.
Guano piles and an ammonia smell
Droppings collect directly under the roost and below entry points on exterior walls. Accumulated guano carries a sharp odor and a fungal health risk.
Dark staining at gaps and vents
Bats leave oily rub marks where they squeeze in. Ridge vents, fascia gaps, chimney flashing and siding seams are the common routes.

Can you just trap and remove bats?
No. Bats are a protected, beneficial species and trapping is not how the job is done. The method is exclusion: one-way devices let the colony leave on its own, then every gap is sealed so it cannot get back in.
Does the time of year matter?
It affects the method. While young are still flightless, a full seal would trap them inside, so exclusion is timed and staged around that. We inspect first and tell you what is possible now versus what has to wait.
How small a gap can a bat use?
Well under an inch. That is why bat work is more exacting than other wildlife jobs, and why sealing the obvious hole is rarely enough on its own.
Is bat guano actually dangerous?
Accumulated guano supports a fungus associated with histoplasmosis, and it damages insulation and drywall. Cleanup is done with protective equipment and containment.
One bat got into my living space. Same problem?
Not necessarily, but it is worth an inspection. A single bat in a room is sometimes a stray, and sometimes the first sign of a roost elsewhere in the structure.
