Signs You Have Opossums

Slow, heavy movement after dark

Opossums are nocturnal and unhurried. Dragging and shuffling under a deck, in a crawl space, or overhead is typical, without the fast scurrying of a rodent.

Openings under decks, sheds and steps

They rarely dig their own burrow. They take over an existing gap or another animal's hole under a structure.

Droppings, or a dead-animal odor

Droppings accumulate around the den. Opossums also die in confined spaces like crawl spaces and wall voids, which is a common reason for the call.

Hearing scratching but don't know what it is? That's most of our calls. We'll identify it during the inspection.

What Opossum Removal Includes

Opossums rarely dig their own burrow. They take over an existing gap or another animal's hole under a structure, which means the opening is already there and will be used again if it is not closed.

Straight to the point, Mike was the best. A bunch of companies didn't want to take the job of getting rid of a bird's nest, but he made it seem easy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Opossum or possum?

Same animal in everyday use. The species in New Jersey is the Virginia opossum.

Are opossums aggressive?

They tend to bluff, hiss, bare teeth or play dead rather than attack. They will bite if handled, which is why removal is not a job to do bare-handed.

Why do they end up in crawl spaces?

They want a dark, dry, enclosed den and are not fussy about where. Any unsealed crawl space, deck skirt or gap under a shed qualifies.

Will it leave on its own?

It may move on, and then something else uses the same opening. Sealing the access is what actually resolves it.

Do you handle a dead opossum under the house?

Yes. Dead animal removal, cleanup of the area, and sealing the way in are handled together, since the last part is what stops it happening again.
