Signs You Have Skunks
Persistent musk near the house
A low, lingering skunk smell around a deck, shed or crawl space usually means one is denning there, not that one passed through.
Fresh digging at ground level
Skunks dig shallow entry holes under decks, sheds, porches and concrete steps, often reopening a burrow another animal started.
Cone-shaped holes in the lawn
Skunks dig for grubs at night, leaving three-inch divots and rolled-back sod across the yard.
Hearing scratching but don't know what it is? That's most of our calls. We'll identify it during the inspection.
What Skunk Removal Includes
Skunks spray when they are startled or cornered, so the approach, trap placement and handling all matter. A denning skunk also rarely shows itself, which is why a steady musk near one part of the house is often the only sign.
- Inspection of decks, sheds, porches, steps and crawl spaces to find the den and any secondary access
- Humane trapping and removal handled to avoid spraying
- Check for young before any opening is closed
- Screening and sealing of the space so nothing can re-den under it
- Filling of the entry holes
- Warranty on the work performed
How It Works
- 1Comprehensive inspection. We find the animal and the entry points — rooflines, soffits, attic and gable vents, crawl spaces, damaged siding.
- 2Humane removal. Safe, proven methods to get the animal out quickly.
- 3Sealing and repair. We seal every access point and repair the damage, with a warranty on the work performed.
What Our Customers Are Saying
Acorn Wildlife was absolutely fantastic. Completely professional and quick service. My two technicians worked quickly and solved my problem.
Straight to the point, Mike was the best. A bunch of companies didn't want to take the job of getting rid of a bird's nest, but he made it seem easy.
Mike and Luke came by as soon as they can and keep us all at ease. Took care of our problem swiftly!!

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the skunk spray during removal?
Handled carefully, spraying is avoidable. Skunks spray when startled or cornered, so the approach, trap placement and handling are all built around keeping the animal calm.
There is a smell but I have not seen anything.
Often still a skunk. A denning skunk is nocturnal and stays out of sight, so a steady musk near one part of the house is frequently the only sign until the inspection finds the den.
Can you get rid of the smell?
Removing the animal and the den stops the source. Residual odor in soil, insulation or under a deck is assessed during the inspection so you know what is involved.
Do skunks carry rabies?
Skunks are one of the species that can carry rabies in New Jersey, which is a good reason not to approach or attempt to trap one yourself.
What stops another skunk moving in?
Sealing the space. An open gap under a deck or shed will be used again, by a skunk or by an opossum or groundhog, so the exclusion work is the part that lasts.
