Where Are Hamilton's Groundhogs Coming From?
What they find is postwar landscaping at the perfect age: sheds on grade, concrete stoops with fifty years of settling beside them, and vegetable gardens thirty feet away. The burrow signature is unmistakable once you know it, a 10 to 12 inch entrance with a fan of fresh soil, and the tenant confirms itself by grazing in broad daylight. Nighttime diggers with small, shallow holes are skunks, a different job entirely.
