How Do I Know It's a Groundhog Under My Shed?

The township's layout drives the pattern. The meadows around Washington Lake Park and the leftover field edges hold the breeding population, and dispersing juveniles follow fence lines and drainage swales into the neighborhoods each May and June. A shed on grade in a Turnersville backyard is exactly what a two-year-old groundhog is looking for: cover overhead, soft soil, and a garden within thirty feet.

What makes this more than a garden problem is the excavation. A burrow system runs 20 to 40 feet with chambers 2 to 5 feet down, and under a shed slab or patio that tunneling removes the bearing soil. Tilting slabs, cracked patio corners, and doors that stop closing are the symptoms we get called about most, usually a season after the hole first appeared.

Short answer: Look for the front door: a 10 to 12 inch opening with a fan of fresh-dug soil, usually tight against the shed, patio, or stoop, plus a daytime animal the size of a small dog grazing your yard or garden. Daytime digging means groundhog. Skunks and opossums work nights and dig far less.

Our development backs up to a detention basin. Is that where they keep coming from?
Almost certainly. Basin banks are ideal burrow ground: open, grassy, undisturbed, and township-maintained rather than fenced. You cannot empty the basin of groundhogs, but you can make your own shed and patio undiggable with a buried barrier, and that is the half of the problem you control.
The hole showed up in the fall. Can this wait until spring?
The animal may already be hibernating by late fall, but the burrow will be reoccupied in March, by the same groundhog or a new one. Will fumigating or flooding the burrow work?
We do not recommend either. Fumigants are restricted, dangerous near structures, and inhumane, and flooding a burrow under a slab makes the soil-loss problem worse. Live trapping, proper removal under New Jersey rules, and a physical barrier is slower by a few days and better in every other way.
